Just arrived? Your first 8 days in Luxembourg

Registration, bank, phone and health insurance — the exact order that saves you a second trip to every office.

You made it. Boxes everywhere, a new key, and a to-do list that seems to grow on its own. Here is the order that works — every step unlocks the next one, so don't shuffle them.

Days 1–3: declare yourself

Within three working days of moving in, register at your commune (déclaration d'arrivée). Bring your passport or ID, rental contract and, for non-EU nationals, your authorisation to stay. You leave with a paper that everything else asks for — so this is always step one.

Days 3–5: money and phone

Open a bank account (passport, registration paper, proof of address, employment contract if you have one) and get a local SIM or eSIM. Your IBAN unlocks salary, rent and insurance payments.

Days 5–8: health cover

Affiliate with the CNS (health insurance) via your employer or directly, then pick a médecin traitant — a GP who becomes your entry point to every specialist. Dentists and specialists book out weeks ahead, so register before you need one.
