Opening a bank account as a newcomer

Which documents banks actually ask for, how long it takes, and what to do while you wait.

No Luxembourg IBAN, no salary, no rent payments, no phone contract. The bank appointment is the bottleneck of week one — here's how to clear it fast.

Bring the full file the first time

Most banks ask for: passport or ID, commune registration paper, proof of address (rental contract), and an employment contract or proof of funds. Call ahead and confirm the list — a second appointment costs you another week.

How long it really takes

Appointment within days, card and codes within one to two weeks. Ask for e-banking access on the spot so you can move money while the card is in the post.

While you wait

Keep a card from home (or a travel card) for daily spending, and don't sign a phone contract that requires a local IBAN until yours works. Your Moien plan reminds you the day the card should arrive — and what to do if it doesn't.
